Yeah, we've all seen those "got milk" advertisements before; clad with celebrities, professional athletes and pop culture icons sporting trademark milk mustaches across their upper lips reminding you to "drink milk everyday"...
Not even a cold refreshing glass of milk could've prevented Superman's 2006 movie rehash from turning into a flop. Nice going, extra-strength dairy hormones.
Yes, even Superman knows that drinking milk can help your bones grow strong. Or.....not?...
If you look a little closer, milk can be a whole lot more than just a refreshing beverage that supposedly strengthens your bones. As a matter of fact, milk may actually do the opposite. According to a study conducted by Swedish college Uppula University, the given results concluded that milk may not be good for your bones, or even your body. An ongoing set of data derived from the study indicated increasing levels in stress among the men and women who were surveyed in their dairy consumption habits month dairy diet, mostly consisting of consuming milk and other dairy products. The results were quite alarming;
Women who consumed three or more glasses of milk a day had a higher risk of fracture and a higher risk of death. Men who drank three or more glasses of milk a day had a slightly higher risk of death -- mostly associated with cardiovascular death -- compared to those who drank less than one glass a day. And there was no reduced risk of fracture as milk consumption increased.

(Time for a personal confession: My family practically lives on milk. Everybody in the house (except for my mom, she's practically allergic) must drink at LEAST three glasses of milk a day (and yes, milk on cereal and hot oatmeal counts) There's never a moment where a cold fresh gallon of milk isn't in the refrigerator. Believe me, if trends in milk consumption are somewhat associated with a person's mortality, then my milk-crazed family is ultimately doomed.)
Now that's a real..uh..milk mustache...huh..
Milk has also been proven to contain inflammatory properties, often derived from lactose intolerance, such as acne formation, sinus congestion, and occasional strain in the digestive tract (this is where my mom's allergic reactions comes in), so its no wonder why milk and dairy products can turn a lot of people off pretty fast. Not mentioning the included growth hormones and antibiotic supplements, milk can send a lot of people sprinting down the grocery aisle for the nearest carton of almond or soy substitute.
SO AFTER THAT FREAKING DAIRY INDUCED HORROR DISPLAY WHY IS IT STILL DAMN GOOD FOR YOU, YOU ASK?
Remember this chocolate milk loving bunny? He haunts my dreams now....
Well here's why.
Believe it or not, milk can actually be good for you (GASP) despite all that nasty stuff. Even with science arguing that milk may fracture your bones some time down the road, milk actually does contain calcium and other various healthy nutrients that can help you stay fit. Even though calcium has the chemical components to fracture your bones. YES THAT'S RIGHT, MILK CAN APPARENTLY HELP YOU OR HURT YOU DEPENDING ON HOW ITS FEELING TODAY. The relationship between calcium and its correlation with the mortality of mankind is literally a concept of paradoxical proportions.
Seriously, I am not freaking kidding. This study has literally ended up becoming another trip into The Twilight Zone.
So before anything else gets even more confusing than it's already become, let's review;
MILK CAN BE UNAPPEALING AND MAY HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO DO SOME STRANGE AND FRIGHTENING STUFF, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE HEALTHY AND PERFECTLY OKAY.
So whether you got milk or not, that's all up to you. Let me know your take on the topic down below in the comments.
I'm gonna go enjoy a nice glass of chocolate milk-because...calcium...
WELP I'M GOING TO MY HAPPY PLACE...SEE YA IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE

Interesting. For years, I've been hearing nothing but milk is good for your bones. Sometimes, even milk can be unhealthy. Nothing is exactly 100% healthy. Got to take them with moderation.
ReplyDeleteAs for Got Milk?, I've seen countless ads from sports to movies. It's all about making money by making people buy their products and it certainly paid off.
For the longest time my family used 2% milk but we switched over to whole milk now. Seems to be doing better for us. I mean water is always a better option but water and cereal is gross.

ReplyDeleteSorry for deleting the comment, I accidently removed it twice, trying to edit it. I just wanted to say I enjoyed the humor in your blog post. It kept me interesting in what I was reading. I find it very interesting that milk could be considered unhealthy. It blows my mind that milk would ever be considered unhealthy. Nice post!
